Alvaro Leal Martinez, 68, an Edinburg, Texas native passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2022 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. He was born on a Friday, February 19, 1954 to Sabas Martinez, Sr. and Eluteria Leal Martinez.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Gabino Martinez, Isidro Martinez, Trinidad Martinez, Alicia Martinez, Irma Martinez, Ramiro Martinez, Luciano Martinez and Natalio Martinez, sister in law; Irene Martinez.
Alvaro is survived by his loving wife of 39 years; Margot Montoya Martinez, children; Rodney Javier (Arely Mendoza) Martinez, Lora Lee (Tony Innouvong) Martinez and Christa Marie Martinez, grandchildren; Emma Jade Martinez, Gianna Alice Martinez, Soledad Innouvong and Ethan Alvaro Martinez, brother; Sabas Martinez, Jr., sisters-in-law; Manuela Martinez and Manuela Martinez, numerous nieces and nephews and dozens of former foster children who he, along with his wife, cared for deeply,
Alvaro was a man of faith and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. He lived in Edinburg all of his life and was a graduate of Edinburg High School, Class of 1973. He was a man who loved education and was the first of his family to graduate from the University of Texas – Pan American with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He spent his professional life as a school teacher for 28 years touching the lives of hundreds of students. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with a celebration of his life at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 East Richardson Road in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be: Rodney Martinez, Tony Innouvong, Isaac Sanchez, Ricardo Garza, Joaquin Almanza, Jacob Garza, Rudy Martinez and Trinidad Martinez. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Manager/Funeral Director (former student) and staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home.
