Armando “Mando” Ponce, Sr., age 74, passed away peacefully at Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance on Saturday June 6th, 2015. Mando was born in Edinburg, Texas on July 4th, 1940 to Jose and Rosa G. Ponce. He was the youngest of 11 siblings. He was a proud graduate of Edinburg High School, class of 1960. He retired from the Texas Department of Transportation after 31 years of exemplary service receiving multiple awards annually.
“Mando”, as he was known to many, was happily married to Dora Perez Ponce for 50 years. He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Eva (Nick) Rutledge, Ofelia (Gregorio) Saenz, Emma (Jack) Coddington; and five brothers, Roel (Carmen) Ponce, Octavio (Maria) Ponce, J.R.Milo (Olga) Ponce & Oscar Ponce, Sr. and Adalberto Ponce. He is survived by his two sons Armando (Esmeralda) Ponce Jr. and Richard (Erika) Ponce; grandchildren; Robynne Nega, Armando Ponce III, Zachary Nega, Renee Danielle Ponce, Arleena Ponce, and John Luke Ponce; sisters in law- Elda Ponce, Olivia Perez, and Gloria (Gilbert) Flores and numerous nieces and nephews and six
Armando was a devout Catholic. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic in Edinburg. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and attending their activities. He also was an avid outdoorsman spending most of his free time barbecuing, fishing, and hunting with his family and friends. In his youth, his passion was fixing up cars and racing. He loved watching boxing, football, and war movies. He loved his Cowboys!
The Ponce family will receive friends today, Tuesday, June 9, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street, in Edinburg. Catholic Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1302 East Champion Street in Edinburg. Catholic burial will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen.
Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Armando Ponce III, Zachary Nega, Roland Ponce, Kenny Ponce, Aaron Ponce, and Rene Saenz. Honorary pallbearers will be Arturo Ponce Sr. and Jesse Caltzontzint. Our deepest gratitude to family and friends who have shared their love and support through prayers, phone calls and visits. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
