Arnulfo Maximo De Leon
December 25, 1921 — January 4, 2013
Arnulfo “Nuffy” Maximo De Leon, 91, entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 4, 2013 at his residence in Edinburg. He was born December 25, 1921 in Donna, Texas to Cresencio De Leon and Gregoria Gutierrez De Leon.
Arnulfo is preceded in death by his parents, wife; Maria Guadalupe “May” De Leon, sister; Angelita Macias, brothers; Alfredo and Alejandro De Leon.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister; Armandina Mercado, brother-in-law; Robert Smith, sister-in-law; Minnie Healy, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Arnulfo proudly served his country and earned the rank of Staff Sargent in the United States Marine Corps during WWII serving from September 23, 1942 – October 24, 1945 and also serving during the Korean War from October 30, 1950 – January 25, 1952 where he was honorably discharged from both wars. He was a combat and reconnaissance photographer who recorded notable battles like Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Guam, and the Liberation of the Philippines for the US Marine Corps as well as fighting in them. He was listed as M.I.A.(Missing In Action) for about 2 weeks when his camp was overrun by the Imperialist Japanese forces. The family wishes to give a “Thank You” to the following caregivers, doctors, and agencies for the compassionate care and services they provided for uncle Nuffy; Luz Rodriguez, Romana Lara, Elsa Regalado, Naida Aguilar, Frank & Blanca Saucedo, Pat Mercado and Steve Mercado, Dr. Dona Cooper and Dr. Cesar Matos, ASC Home Health nurses and staff, Allstate Hospice nurses and staff, nurses and staff at Aurora House in Weslaco, and the Arbor View Nursing and Rehabilitation nurses and staff .
The family will receive friends today, Monday, January 7, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. A Christian mass will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post #8788 of McAllen will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen, Texas. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Mercado, Tony Mercado, Steve Mercado, Tommy Smith, Zachry Smith, Pat Mercado, Chris Mercado, and Kenny Healy. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
