EDINBURG — Berta D. Gonzalez, 94, entered eternal rest on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Barcelona Assisted Living in McAllen. She was born on November 21, 1919 in Los Ebanos, Texas to Maximo Diaz and Benita Flores. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dan U. Ceballos, Jr. and Sam Gonzalez; son, Dan U. Ceballos, III; 4 – brothers and 3 – sisters.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters; Sonia (Dr. Homero) Rivas and Norma (Robert) Peynado; son, Max (Norma) Ceballos; sister-in-law, Estela Diaz; grandchildren, Yvette (Dr. Mark) Diamond, Aida (Sam) Noble, Dr. Homero Rivas, II, D.R. Ceballos, Michael (Claire) Ceballos, Christopher Ceballos, Sarah Ceballos, Mischelline (Dr. Pete) Alaniz, Monica (Jason) Everitt, Matthew A. Ceballos and Jennifer E. Ceballos; 7 – great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She graduated in 1936 from La Joya High School as Valedictorian of her class. She obtained her M.A. from the University of Texas in 1958. She worked for the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District for 35 years as a teacher and visiting teacher. She counseled many students and their families, and instilled the importance of an education. In 1943, Berta and her husband Dan opened Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home. She served as a Eucharistic minister and lector at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg for many years. She was also a life time member of the Edinburg Hospital Auxiliary and the Retired Teachers Association, which she served as president, vice president and secretary. Berta has been a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas since 1968 and is past regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of Our Lady of Mount Carmel #1993 and was a First Aid Instructor, den mother for Boy Scouts, a leader for Girl Scouts and a 4-H Leader for the City of Edinburg. Berta was also a Century member of the University of Texas Pan American Alumni Association and a member of the Thicket Quilters Guild. Berta was named “Woman of the Year” in 1991 for the city of Edinburg. Berta was a philanthropist of sorts who gave countless hours of energy, charity, love, service and devotion to humankind and to her community. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, business woman, educator and a community leader who touched hundreds of lives throughout her life. She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched, but her legacy and memories will live on forever.
The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to Dr. Tommy Yee; Dr. Eduardo Flores; son-in-law, Dr. Homero Rivas; Barcelona Nursing and Staff; Hospice Compassionate Care, LLC and her dedicated caregiver, Nancy A. Sanchez for all the care and special attention given to their “Mom”. In lieu of flowers, family ask that donations be made to charity of choice in memory of their mother.
The family will receive family and friends today, Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. by the Mount Carmel #1993 Catholic Daughters of Americas in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn in Edinburg. Christian Mass will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Dr. Homero Rivas, II, D.R. Ceballos, Christopher Ceballos, Matthew Ceballos, Dr. Antonio Diaz, Michael Ceballos and Roy Diaz. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Peynado, Dr. Homero Rivas, David Diaz and Carlos Torres, Jr.
Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia and staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
