Bernardo Saldana, Jr., 89, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2016 at Amara Hospice in Edinburg. He was born on Friday, March 18, 1927 to Bernardo Saldana, Sr. and Clotilde Garcia Saldana in Edinburg, Texas. Bernardo is preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Maria Flores and Lydia Case.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years; Elida Bazan Saldana, children; Richard (Lynn Anne Cochran-Saldana) Saldana, Anita Saldana and Robert (Betsy) Saldana, sisters; Alicia Torres, Minerva Aguirre, Alma Ruiz, Sylvia Saldana and Yolanda Garcia, grandchildren; Chelsea Anne Chappell and Addison Avery Chappell, numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernardo graduated from Edinburg High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the Army during W.W.II. He was a member of El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church in Edinburg. He worked for AT&T / Southwestern Bell for over 45 years until his retirement. He was a great arbitrator and Vice President for AFLCIO - CWA. He was committed to the union and workers, always believing in helping others. He was even a member of the 15 gallon blood donor club. During his earlier years he enjoyed hunting and until now he enjoyed reading western and novel books, especially those written by Tony Hillerman. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
His family will receive friends today, Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a celebration of life service at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. A christian services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Christian burial with military honors will follow to Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
