Cecilia Casas

October 8, 1934 — April 3, 2013

Cecilia Casas, 78,  entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma.  She was born to Cayetano Casas of Santa Rita, TX and Gregoria Lopez Casas of Garciasville, TX on October 8, 1934.

Sister appreciated the family’s land which endeared her to the rich vegetation and the opportunity to understand the cultural and natural environment of the Rio Grande Valley.  Cecilia enjoyed her primary and secondary education in the public school system of Edinburg, TX.  Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy, Webster Groves, MO on September 6, 1956 and made her first profession of vows August 16, 1959.  Her dedicated life of ministry inspired multiple missions as a religious educator, elementary teacher, vocation coordinator, mentor of Mercy Associates and parish social ministry.  Sister’s missions included: St. Patrick, Walnut, KS, ST. Alphonsus, New Orleans, LA, St. Joseph, Frontenac, MO, St. Alice, Plainview, TX, St. Joseph, Slaton, TX, Immaculate Conception, Rio Grande City, TX, Social ministry, Alamo and McAllen, TX. Sister’s education included: BA Elementary Education, Webster College, St. Louis, MO, MA Theology St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX, MA Spirituality-Creighton University, Omaha, NE.  Spiritual Direction/ Social Studies, Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, CA.  Sister Cecilia retired on October 14, 2009 in Oklahoma City, OK.  Sister continued spreading her joyful spirit and enjoyed all people. Her social nature was supportive of prayer, appreciation of music, spiritual thoughts and celebration of life. She will be remembered as a kind charitable religious Sister of Mercy and as loving and being loved by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Abuindo Casas (Lydia Mercado Casas) , Noe Casas (Anita Casas) Porfirio Casas; sisters and brothers-in-law: Guadalupe Sandoval (Lionel Sandoval), Lucia Casas Rodriguez, Linda Economedes (Johnny Economedes), and broter-in-law: Carlos Garza.

She is survived by her sister, Evangelina Casas Garza, brother-in-law, Israel Rodriguez, sister-in-law, Maria Helen Sanchez Casas as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and their children, Mercy physicians, co-workers/caretakers, Mercy Associates and Religious Sisters of Mercy.  Memorial gifts may be made to : Masses, Sacred Heart Church, Edinburg, TX, Comfort House, McAllen, TX, and Project Arise, Pharr, TX.

The Casas family will receive friends Monday, April 8, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home and from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 300 North 15th Street, in Edinburg.  A Christian mass will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Concelebrants please bring alb and stole.  Christian burial with follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.  Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
