Elias De La Garza

July 20, 1922 — December 18, 2010

Elias De La Garza, 88, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission.  He was born on July 20, 1922 to Espiridion De La Garza and Dolores Flores De La Garza.

Elias is survived by his wife of 64 years; Severina M. De La Garza, daughters; Elia Garcia, Viola (Gilberto) Luna, Enedelia (Sebastian) Ochoa, Mary Lou Castillo, and Noelia (Jose Luis) Rendon sons; Elias De La Garza Jr. and Eliazar (Oralia) De La Garza, sister; Santos Rodriguez, twenty six grandchildren, forty-four great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elias is preceded in death by his parents, daughter; Rosa Maria De La Garza, brothers; Teleforo De La Garza, Felipe De La Garza, Victoriano De La Garza, Jesus De La Garza, sisters; Gabina Garza, Lile Guzman, and brother-in-law; Jose Rodriguez and son-in-law; Ruben Garcia.

Elias was an Army veteran who served during World War II. He worked for Valley Fruit Company for many years.  He was a nice, easy going person who loved telling jokes, listening to music and dancing.  He enjoyed playing cards, gambling, smoking, drinking, and going to bars.  He lived life to its fullest.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him.

The De La Garza family received friends on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.  Christian Mass was held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg.  Christian burial and military honors followed to Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.  Having the distinguished honor of serving as pallbearers were Armando Garcia, Bobby Alaniz, Ruben Garcia Jr., David Rodriguez, Eliazar De La Garza Jr., and Jose Luna.  Funeral services were entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
