Gloria "Glo" Diana Garza, age 65, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. She was born in Rio Grande City, Texas on Tuesday, April 22, 1952 and was the eldest of eight children of Roberto D. Garza, Sr. and Aurelia A. Garza.
Gloria attended elementary school through Junior High School in Pharr, Texas. She attended Junior High School and High School in San Isidro, Texas. Gloria attended Pan American University now known as University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Gloria was employed by University of Texas – Pan American now known as University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Gloria was a secretary for the English Department under Dean Dowell and then became the Department Secretary for the Department of Communications until her retirement in August 2011 after 31 years of faithful service. Gloria worked under Communications Department heads Dr. Marion Monta, Dr. Jack Stanley, Dr. Tom Grabowski and Dr. Dora Elia Saavedra.
Gloria is preceded in death by her father; Roberto D. Garza, Sr. of San Isidro, Texas, brother-in-law; Jorge Luis Lopez of Rio Grande City, Texas and niece; Celina Lopez of Rio Grande City, Texas.
Gloria is survived by her dear mother; Aurelia A. Garza of Edinburg, sister; Blanca Estela (Hernan) G. Cuellar of Edinburg, brother; Roberto D. (Diana) Garza, Jr. of Corpus Christi, sister; Aurelia G. Lopez of Rio Grande City, sister; Rebecca G. Turrubiates of Alamo, sister; Maria Elena Garza of Edinburg, sister; Nelida Garza of Plano and brother; Jose Luis Garza of Edinburg. Gloria is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Her family received friends Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. Christian services will be held today, Friday, July 14, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Interment will follow to Rio Grande City Cemetery in Rio Grande City, Texas. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be: Robert D. Garza, Jr., Jose Luis Garza, Jose Luis "Joey" Mariness, Javier A. Lopez, Hernan Cuellar, and Jorge Luis Alvarez. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
