Julia Anita G. Gonzalez

January 28, 1920 — August 16, 2010

Julia Anita Gonzalez, age 90, of Edinburg, Texas, passed away on August 16, 2010, at home with her family at her bedside.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband; Rev. Dr. Josue Gonzalez, parents; Hermengildo and Eladia Gonzales, brothers; Alonzo, Samuel, and David Gonzales.

Left to cherish her memory is her son; Dr. Josue R. (Leticia) Gonzalez, daughter; Irma Gonzalez-Freestate, step-daughter; Jodie (Roger) Gonzalez-Lomax, sisters; Cicelia Gorena, Elida Garza, and Angelica (Carlos) de la Garza,  5 - grandchildren and many loving and treasured nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gonzalez was a 1941 graduate of Texas A&I College, Kingsville, Texas, with a degree in English.  Besides being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Gonzalez was also a faithful partner in ministry with her beloved husband throughout their long marriage.  She served with him at his pastorates in Fort Worth, Mission, Corpus Christi, and Austin, Texas as a church organist, choir director and pianist, sometimes as church secretary, and also with women’s and children’s programs.  She served as well as a conference officer of the United Methodist Women of the Rio Grande Conference. She was also actively in the development of a Spanish hymnal for the Rio Grande Conference published in 1955 and used by the Conference for many years.

Upon moving to Edinburg, Texas in 1991 after having been widowed, she became an active member of El Buen Pastor UMC.  This particular church became a special light in her life; she participated in it joyfully throughout the rest of her life.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to beloved sitter; Jennifer Garcia, Yadira Rodriguez of Fountain of Life Home Health, Leonor Gutierrez of Elder Care and to Pax Villa Hospice.  Special thanks to Celia Montoya and Alma Hernandez for their extraordinary and loving care.  The family also extends special thanks to the Rev. Dr. Ruben Saenz, Manuel and Ellie Garcia, who gave Mrs. Gonzalez so much help and comfort.

The Gonzalez family will receive friends at El Buen Pastor UMC, 705 E. University Dr., Edinburg, Texas on Friday, August 20, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The family will meet at El Buen Pastor UMC on Saturday, August 21, 2010 for a Chrisitan Service to be held at 10:00 a.m. Christian burial will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the S.M.U. Perkins School of Theology, Rio Grande Conference Scholarship Fund in memory of Rev. Dr. Josue Gonzalez (call 214-415-3166); Rev. Dr. Josue Gonzalez Endowed Scholarship Southwestern University Fund, P.O. Box 770, Georgetown, Texas 78627 or the Memorial Fund at El Buen Pastor UMC, Edinburg, Texas. Funeral services were entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
