Olga V. Ponce, 91, entered eternal rest on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. She was born on September 24, 1922 at La Estrella Ranch, Edinburg, Texas to Plutarco De La Vina, Jr. and Rebecca Esparza De La Vina. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jose Ramiro “Milo” Ponce; brothers, Plutarco De La Vina, III and Plutarco Rodolfo De La Vina.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Jose Jesus (Mary Alice) Ponce; daughters, Rebecca Rosa Ponce and Noemi (James) Ponce – Sigler; 10 – grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Olga was a life time member of El Buen Pastor Methodist Church in Edinburg where she was an active member of El Buen Pastor United Methodist Women and El Buen Pastor United Methodist choir for 30 years. The De La Vina and Ponce families were a pioneer and influential part of our community. She was a strong Independent woman and a political activist who loved public speaking. She worked at the Pediatric Nursing Department at Grandview Hospital for many years in the late 1940’s, and later was a supervisor at Donna Fruit Company for 32 years. Olga was also a great animal lover and a champion at board games, her children envied her winning streak. Her family was honored to have her in their lives as she greatly had an impact on all of them. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all those whose lifes she touched. Her memories and legacy will continue through her family.
The Ponce family will receive friends today, Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 E. Kuhn Street in Edinburg. A Christian service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, 705 E. University, Edinburg. Christian burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Mike John-Paul Wilson, Richard William Kellard, Kenny Bryan Ponce, Bobby Joe Ponce, Gary Joseph Bergeron, and George Joseph Kellard. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia and staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
