EDINBURG — Omar C. Garza, M.D., 82 entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 06, 2014 at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen with his family by his bedside. He was born on December 3, 1931 in Mercedes, Texas to Leoncio Garza and Nellie Chapa Garza. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Homero, Oswaldo, B.L., and Oscar L. Garza, Sr.; sisters, Ofira Guerra and Ofelia Saenz.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 60 years; Dora Vela Garza; sons, Omar Jaime Garza and Christopher R. (Elma) Garza; daughters, Dee Dee Adame, Nellie (Mike) Martin and Alma A. Garza; brothers, Ben Garza, M.D. and Marin Garza, M.D.; sister, Otila Garza; 9 – grandchildren; 3 – great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Omar lived in Edinburg most of his life and was an Edinburg High School graduate of 1950. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. He proudly served our country in the Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from Pan America College, University of Texas School of Pharmacy in Austin and University of Texas – Medical School in Galveston. His professional associations included the Hidalgo-Starr County Medical Society, The Texas Medical Association, The American Medical Association, The American Academy of Family Practitioners, and The Texas Academy of Family Practitioners. Dr. Omar was also a member of several civic and community affairs which included being the former president of Edinburg School Board, the past director of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, past member of Texas State Board of Education, Past president of Edinburg Hospital medical staff, Past chief of staff of the Edinburg Hospital OB-GYN Department, Past director of Hidalgo Savings and Loan Association, Member of El Cid Caravan, Order of the Alhambra organization, member of The Hidalgo County Historical Museum, Past Chairman of the Edinburg Golf Course, and member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Hidalgo County Sheriff Posse Arena. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends, golfing, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, team penning and living the Cowboy lifestyle. He also enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was a man with a big heart and contagious smile. His legacy will live on through the lives of his wife and family.

The Garza family would like to give a special “Thank You” to the nurses and staff of the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen.

The Garza family will receive friends today, Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 421 South Closner Boulevard, in Edinburg. Christian Mass will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial with military honors under the auspices of Sgt. Benito Alaniz V.F.W. Post #7473 will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Joseph building fund. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be David Omar Adame, Jr., Don Omar Martin, Michael V. Martin, Bryan D. Garza, Carlos X. Guerra, Sr. and Carlos X. Guerra, Jr. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Funeral Director and staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
