EDINBURG-Pedro “Pete” Chavez Jr., 87, born February 2, 1923, went to be with the Lord February 27, 2010 at Edinburg Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Chavez Sr. and Elena Flores-Chavez, his loving wife of 46 years, Petra De La Garza-Chavez, brother; Adan (Raquel) Chavez, sister; Ramona Chavez,
Pete is survived by his children: Richard (Linda) Chavez, Daniel G. (Gloria) Chavez, Maria Elena Chavez, Velia (Michael) Chavez-Holm, brothers; Ernesto (Mary) Chavez, Gilberto (Carol) Chavez, sisters; Virginia (Guadalupe) Vasquez, Connie (Paulino) Serda, Adela (Steve) Krako, grandchildren; Erica Renee, Gabriel, Dina Denise, Rey Rene, Mark, Jennifer, Raven, Carlos, Mylena Kate, Michael, and Walter Andrew. Surviving great grandchildren include Christian Ricardo and Olivia Sarah Chavez.
During WWII, he proudly volunteered and served with the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945. His service included participating in the invasion and liberation of both New Guinea and the Philippines. After returning from the service, he attended Pan American College. He then devoted 30 years to working for the cities of Edinburg and McAllen as a Superintendent and Engineer of local water treatment plants.
Pete was also a dedicated member of the Sacred Heart Church of Edinburg. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing with friends and family. In addition, he devoted time to Little League and Pony League as an umpire and coach. His thoughtful, giving and passionate character will be remembered by the many friends he made throughout his lifetime. His family is deeply saddened by the passing of this caring man, but happy to know that he is now resting in peace. He will always be loved as a brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, tio, primo and friend.
Pallbearers include Christian Chavez, Walter Holm, Mark Chavez, Michael Chavez, Carlos Vasquez and Larry Trevino.
The Chavez family will receive friends today, March 2, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Christian mass will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
