Yolanda Luisa Smith, 73, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Amara Hospice Facility in Edinburg. She was born on Monday, March 15, 1943 in Edinburg, Texas to Alonzo Smith and Eugenia Ochoa Smith. She is preceded in death by her parents, step father; Gilberto Gonzales, brother; Renaldo Guadalupe Smith and nephew; Renaldo G. Smith.
She is survived by her niece; Sobey (Daniel) Smith-Rebollar, nephew; Kelly (Carmen) Smith, great grandnephews; Brandon B. Smith and Carlos Rebollar, great grandnieces; Mariely Rebollar, Miranda Garza and Jacqueline Smith.
Yolanda lived in Edinburg all of her life and was a member of the Edinburg High School graduating Class of 1961. She enjoyed doing arts & crafts, but her greatest joy was traveling and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Her first big trip was in 1964 at the age of 21 when she went to the World’s Fair in New York City. She even got to march with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago in 1964, shook hands with Prince Charles of Great Britain at San Jacinto National Park in Houston, Texas, and when she traveled to Australia in 2004, she met Terry Irwin, wife of the late Steve Irwin from the “Crocodile Hunter”. She had the opportunity to travel the world visiting all 7 Continents, between 45 – 50 Countries and was a Certified International World Traveler by Holland America. Her family would like to say “Thank You” to Amara Hospice Staff for the care, love and attention they gave their aunt Yolanda and a special “Thank You” to her best friend Michele Ysaguirre for being by her side until the very end. She will be missed by her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.
Her family will receive friends on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be prayed by Becky Hesbrook at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 East Richardson Road in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Daniel Rebollar, Kelly Smith, Brandon B. Smith, Carlos Rebollar,Hank Ysaguirre and Richard Ochoa. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Funeral Director and Staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
